At half past two Sonny turned on four 100-watt bulbs and the men covered their eyes with hot hands.

'Into the cloakroom, girls.' Once again we squeezed into the tiny room. The girls put on their headscarves and macs and leant against the wall.

'Oh, me eyes aren't half sore.'

'I reckon you've got the conjunctivitis.'

'What's that?'

'An infection.'

'Infection? I haven't got no infection - where d'you think I've bin to get an infection?'

I made to leave. 'Don't go out there or Sonny will never get rid of the men.'
